IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Our annual Christmas dinner was held this year at Tocororo Restaurant in the city of Downey. It was a memorable occasion that joined the ALPHA family with friends and sympathizers. We had moments of friendly fellowship and serious words expressed by our General Secretary, AndresNazario Sargen, who came from Miami to be with us on this event.

Referencing specific data, Nazario gave an analysis of the situation in Cuba. He noted how difficult and sorrowful it is, to watch what the Cuban people have to tolerate under Castro's communism. At the sametime, he gave us the assurance that the tyranny itself suffers from a terminal illness that, thankfully, proclaims its demise in the near future.

He spoke about the web of clandestine work that our ALPHA 66 cells, working hand in hand with the Cuban underground, have taken upon themselves to destroy the infamous communist system in the coming year of 1999.

ALPHA 66 IN THE VETERAN’S PARADE

As it happens every year on the 11th of November, the American Army Veterans held their parade in San Diego and, as usual, Alpha 66 was invited to participate through our delegate, Sergio Mayea. On this occasion the Vietnamese veterans were also invited. Vietnamese and Cubans have always kept a very friendly relationship, since we both have been victims of similar circumstances by witnessing our countries fall under the tyrannical oppression of communism.

During the fall of Vietnam, as the Vietnamese people despaired over leaving their homeland, it was the Cubans, organized by Alpha 66, who drove in a caravan to Camp Pendleton to welcome them. As refugees, we shared with them our own experience and encouraged them to look to the future with hope and faith in their new life in the United States. And during this period, it was also the Cuban refugees who were always supportive of the American Army Forces’ right to fight communism in an effort to prevent the fall of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Cuban exiles were present not only in the battlefields fighting as part of the U.S. Army Forces, but also in the streets of American cities confronting those who opposed the war.

Thus, in memory of our martyrs and heroes, men and women who gave their lives fighting communism, ALPHA 66 and its members, along with their Vietnamese brothers and sisters, were proud to be a part of this patriotic parade held by the Veterans of the United States Army Forces.

A CAMP WITH A MISSION

Our camp, "Rumbo Sur" has always been the object of curiosity for journalists from both newspapers and television. The fact that thousands of men and women have been trained there to prepare in the event they
are needed in the inevitable conflict that will unfold in Cuba makes it more than just an object of curiosity. It makes this camp a symbol of Alpha's commitment to its duty.

Foreign journalists, especially from Europe, often visit "Rumbo Sur." In these photos we see journalists from  Holland and Germany taking pictures and interviewing our General Secretary, Andrés Nazario and other members of our military division. These pictures will later appear in magazines and television programs in Europe.

These new young people, willing to risk everything, deserve the respect of all Cubans who love their country. They are at the forefront of a new Republic with the ideals we were taught by our freedom fighters for independence, the "mambises." Alpha 66 is truly proud of their discipline, commitment, and willingness to serve their country.

Julio 1998.

One of the most horrendous cases executed by orders of Castro, is the attack on the old wooden tugboat, "13 de Marzo," that was transporting a number of Cubans who were fleeing communist slavery, hoping to reach liberty. They were intercepted by Cuban coast guard, and in a cruel way, were sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, just a few miles off the coast of Cuba.  The coast guards prevented anyone from helping the survivors.

Forty-one people lost their lives.  Twenty of them were children, many of whom were mercilessly ripped from their mother's arms when the coast guards showered the small vessel with powerful water hoses.  It was an
unbelievable act carried out on Castro's orders.

In remembrance, and in protest of that horrible crime against innocent people, many acts    took place in the Cuban exile communities.  The fourth anniversary of that tragedy took place this July.  We bring to our page photos on the San Antonio River, in Texas, where a group of Cubans threw flowers into the river. Among them Dr. Carlos Carbonell, Armando Martinez, Danny Orozco and Mariana Castelnao.

After a long illness, Dr. Luis R. Simón Esparza died in Los Angeles this past Saturday, June 13.  A freedom fighter throughout all of his life, Dr. Simón was for many years a member of Alpha 66. He was a member of the National Executive Committee within the Professional's Division.  He was a formidable speaker, a poet of great spiritual sentiment, and possessed a profound knowledge of the history of his beloved country, Cuba.

As a representative of the California delegation at the Fifth National Convention of Alpha 66 recently held in Miami, he gave an emotional speech that was received with admiration by all present. In the photo taken on that occasion, Dr. Simón, third from left to right, is seen with Abel Pérez, director of the 20 De Mayo newspaper, Guillermo Suñé, a member of Alpha 66's National Executive committee, and Andrés Nazario, our Secretary General.

EFFORTS OF ALPHA 66 ARE ACKNOWLEDGED -

On May 19, 1998 our organization  received a proclamation from the Mayor and City Council of Lynwood, California, for its effort in fighting the Castro-Communist tyranny that  subjugates the people of Cuba, and for struggling to bring, in its place, a free society with a democratic government elected by the people.

"ALPHA 66 IN "PRESENCIA CUBANA"

We did not miss participating, as we never have, in the festival sponsored by the Los Angeles Cultural Department and José Martí Patronato.   It is held each year around the 20 of May.  It is an event when Cubans come together in remembrance our far away home land that is still so close to our hearts.  This event goes under the name of PRESENCIA CUBANA (Cuban Presence).

And while the music, greetings, embraces, Cuban food, and whatever else reminds us of our country, made this more than 100,000 person festival an unforgettable occasion, the men and women of Alpha 66 were working in our two booths, preparing our favorite Cuban foods and selling beautiful mementos of our beloved island, in order to raise funds to continue our
fight against the tyranny that oppresses our people. See the enclosed photos.

HISTORIC DOCUMENT AGREED UPON AT THE LEADERS CONFERENCE

HELD IN MIAMI ON FEBRUARY 21, 1998.

ALPHA-66's - HISTORICAL PRESENT

"FATHERLAND, THERE IS NO TRUER JOY THAN TO SERVE YOU WITHOUT INTEREST AND TO DIE WITHOUT STAINS." José Martí.

Its natives and citizens should write the history of their country. Freedom, originally conceded by God, should be sheltered, protected, and defended every moment by its worthy sons, those who offer themselves to sacrifice, effort, renunciation, risk and those which by historic reality, are always the minority.

Back in 1961 a group of young patriots, not many in numbers, who gave ALPHA 66 its origin simultaneously honored its civilian roots while embracing the weapons that would demonstrate to Cuba that Castro's tyranny could be fought. These men and women left written proof in the form of the Ideological Principles which were and continue today after 36 years to be the reason and objective of the task at hand. In these Principles the Cuba of the future is analyzed in terms of its labor, military, and agrarian aspects. Also in terms of its judicial power, education, citizen's rights, international role, overall economic development and most importantly, the Principles defined a purely Cuban-style struggle, carried out by Cubans without foreign intervention. A struggle that would guarantee the birth of a solid strong Republic free of restrictions and obligations.

Those ideological Principles, as with this Declaration, are written in simple language without rhetoric so that all Cubans may understand them. ALPHA 66 lives in gracious debt to the humble and simple workers who without boasting have over the years been the chief contributors to this cause.

ALPHA-66 IS WORTHY OF CUBA'S AND THE EXILE'S TRUST.

The liberating struggle has been long but enduring. ALPHA 66 has succeeded in not granting a ceasefire. We have always fought against pessimism and indifference at a very high cost of spilled blood and suffering but with our goals achieved. To the heroic deeds of the Bay of Pigs, a glorious, albeit sad event, we answered with numerous incredible commando attacks that made the tyrant Castro cry to the United Nations back in the sixties.

Multiple guerrilla landings were carried out, new attacks, infiltrations, as well as the capture of Cuban vessels which, disguised as fishing boats, were actually transporting guerrilla fighters and weapons to Colombia and Venezuela. The patriotic mission of Vicente Mendez, Rodriguez Perez and other officers and soldiers was successful among other things and at the cost of their own lives, in obstructing the ridiculous "10 million tons of sugar cane harvest." The mission also led to the Maximo Gomez Plan of sabotages and other actions. This plan which continues to this day more active than ever, has been able to elude all attempts by Cuban authorities to destroy it. The landing of the Mariel Commandos has increased the presence of ALPHA 66 inside the political jails of Cuba. The creation of secret cells begun by political prisoners has spread throughout the island. ALPHA 66 maintains solid agreements with opposition groups that we have asked to remain anonymous for fear of what the Cuban Security forces would do if their members were to be captured. It is not the same thing to be associated with an organization without past or history, but it is very dangerous for Cubans in Cuba to be associated with an organization with a heroic track record like ALPHA 66.

ALPHA 66 is honored and pleased to witness how different organizations are beginning to demonstrate an awareness and concern for the implantation of an absolute democracy in Cuba once the Communist government has disappeared. Our study and projections on this topic which we put together several years ago will be available at a more opportune time.

"WHEN A PERSON IS HAPPY ABOUT THE PAST, HE SPEAKS OF IT." José Martí

Those who are responsible for creating and maintaining the most enduring patriotic, civil, and military organization in Cuba's beautiful history have a lot to tell. A characteristic that demonstrates simplicity and extreme patriotism on the part of ALPHA 66 has been to never reject, with the exception of people aligned with the tyrant, any summons or invitation made by Cubans to unite in efforts to reach a solution to the Cuban problem. All projects that are "Cuban, honorable and sincere" have enjoyed and can count on our presence and collaboration. At present we are members of "Cuban Unity," an umbrella organization made up of various groups which maintain their identity and free will. It must be said that on various occasions we have rejected the offers of government "agencies" and foreign governments because past experience has taught us that the price paid at the birth of our Republic had been more than enough. We are extremely cautious when we hear the mention of "billions of dollars for the reconstruction of Cuba" -- whether these come from Wall Street or from Europe, we say collaboration, Yes; obligations or compromises, No.

New versions of strange theories do not have our approval. How can those that fight restrictions and defend stability and progress of the poor sympathize with a call to "neoliberalism"?

Is it moral to make contributions to political parties or campaigns in exchange for promises, the contents and extent of which are never known? This organization has travelled throughout the world, has been invited to proclaim the rights of the Cuban people to be free, and has done so without compensation or payment for its work.

"BLESSED IS HE THAT COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD."

We salute with respect the visit of the Holy Father John Paul II to our country. His efforts, worthy of praise, have been rewarded tremendously because of his valiant demands for freedom, human rights, social justice, respect for the family, and the right of young people to make choices for their own lives. The Holy Father has without a doubt opened a window through which a breath of fresh air has irreversibly entered. His phrase, "Do not be afraid" should be adopted as a gallant banner in the face of Castro's cruelty.

"THE FATHERLAND IS NOT YET FREE, THE STRUGGLE COMPELS." Antonio Maceo.

This phrase spoken by General Maceo should apply to the Cubans who, whether in exile or inside the island, have persevered in the actions that have been necessary. The phrase should serve as a call to those that have been absent from the struggle to remind them of their responsibility. Indifference would be considered treason.

For ALPHA 66 the moment calls for confirmation and ratification of purposes:

No to the dialogue with Castro and his clique.
No to the crumbling anexionism.
No to all foreign intervention.
No to modifications to the Helms-Burton law.
No to trips to Cuba.
No to the dollars being sent to Cuba which help Castro.
No to the press that confuses in Castro's favor.
No to the countries which cooperate with Castro.

Yes to the absolute endorsement of internal OPPOSITION against Castro.
Yes to the patriotic efforts to eliminate oppression.
Yes for the continued military preparation for its use and action at any moment.
Yes to be present whenever and wherever it may be useful to the cause of liberation.
Yes to the cooperation among exiled organizations that honestly and unselfishly have maintained their patriotic honor in high standard.

In short, YES to our Ideological Principles, stronger today than ever and resting on the three pillars which have been the foundation and life of our glorious organization:

POLITICAL DEMOCRACY--ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE--SOCIAL JUSTICE
